Spider wins Punters Choice Award

pumpinggas.jpg
The first week of Spring and the weather has been nice enough for at least two days of it. Before Melbourne goes nuts for the footy finals and the Royal Melbourne Show it was good to get some films in early in the month. Highlights from this month’s much lighter program included: Love No. 9 (Director: Gemma Lee) A cutesy pie 1940s starlet neighbour has her attentions for her attractive neighbour spurned. She can’t figure out why until she sneaks into his bedroom and finds out the real reason. Strange as it may sound that is not the first time I have seen food used as a weapon in a movie. Catch Fish (Director: Adam Arkapaw) A perfectly ordinary story of a man who has the hots for a fishmonger (who wears fishnets, what else?) so he takes the fish home and gets into the bath with it. Although the film shows something different (more…)

The audience also included Scott Brenannn and Corrine Grant who I haven’t seen at Fitzroy Shorts since she curated a screening a couple of years ago so it was good to see her again. Highlights from a very dark program included: Emit (Fergus McDonald) (more…)

Isn’t it always the way? Just as you are getting comfortable somewhere, you have to move on. I will miss the friendly bar staff (hi El!), the Churros and the sangria in particular. It was a happy night though with some very funny films screening including the following standouts. Europe (Director: Brendan Cowell) A man’s imagination gets the better of him when his girlfriend goes away backpacking in Europe, the main character reminded me of Todd from the anti-lifestyle (more…)

AFI Award winning animation ‘GARGOYLE’ screens at Fitzroy Shorts!

gargoyle.jpg
Writer/director/animator Michael Cusack brings to Fitzroy Shorts his AFI award winning animation GARGOYLE. ’It’s fantastic that Gargoyle has been recognised by the AFIs. Gargoyle was considered something of a risk for me. Animation is always a labour of love, but as a work of personal expression, Gargoyle was an attempt to make something that would resonate and make people feel differently about animation. Of course, you always hope that an audience will respond, but it’s still a terrific surprise to be recognised in this way.’
A poetic work of dramatic fantasy, Gargoyle was a departure for Cusack, who is well known for his crowd-pleasing comedies.
Gargoyle came more from a place of personal inspiration. (more…)

A Short Cut of a time!

Harvey.jpg
After a successful run in Fitzroy, the organisers of Fitzroy Shorts decided to expand their horizons to reach out to film fans who don’t often make it north of the river. Where better to have the new screening than St Kilda, home of Oscar winners, actors and where seeing production vans parked out on the street is a daily occurrence.

Home of the new Short Cuts screening is Big Mouth Cafe, situated in the heart of St Kilda’s cafe culture and an easy stager home for the patrons afterwards. The theme of the opening night was a cocktail party and the lucky patrons who decided come to first night took full advantage of it. The venue is cosy and the seats are comfortable so you are much more likely to end up talking to people you just met on the night and sharing a drink. Compliments to the bar staff who dealt with all the people at the bar, handed out food and still managed to look like they were having a good time. Cheers to the owners Maree & Paul and their hospitality.
